While for many emergencies it may be important to go to the closest hospital, in general you should try to go Saint Barnabas. Please remember that if you call an ambulance, they may not take you to the hospital of your choice. If you go to another hospital, South Orange OB/GYN cannot direct your care or be responsible for the care that is given to you. We also may have difficulty obtaining your test results.

Obstetrical Emergencies and Labor

Always call the office first. If the office is not open, the answering service will pick up. Tell them that you are pregnant and that it’s an emergency and they will put you in contact with Dr. Dresdner. For many emergencies, an emergency room visit is not necessary and we will see you in the office without an appointment. If you feel that you cannot wait until the office is open, and you are pregnant 16 weeks or less, go to the Emergency Room at Saint Barnabas and tell them that your doctor is Dr. Michael Dresdner and they will reach out and find your doctor. Any care provided to you will be under Dr. Dresdner’s supervision and they will not discharge you without consulting Dr. Dresdner. They will give you instructions for appropriate follow-up appointments at the office.

If you are more than 16 weeks pregnant then you do NOT go to the emergency room; there is a special location for obstetrical emergencies. Go to the main entrance of Saint Barnabas Medical Center and tell them that you are pregnant and need to go to the PET Unit on the third floor. When you get to the PET Unit, tell them that your doctor is Dr. Michael Dresdner and they will call the doctor for you. Every doctor in the PET Unit knows Dr. Dresdner personally and have his home and cell phone numbers. Any care provided to you will be under your doctor's supervision and they will not discharge you without consulting your doctor. They will give you instructions for appropriate follow-up appointments at the doctor’s office.
